My 2 and a Half Week Stint as a Vegetarian

I believe many people take Lent as a second chance at New Year's resolutions.  The whole point of giving something up for Lent is to draw closer to God in the absence of something you really value.  It has the danger of turning into a public display of self-deprival without any spiritual practice.  This is not meant to be a slap in the face for those of you who are giving things up because really it has a good potential for effective practice... really this is a background leading up to a story detailing my fall into this trap of giving something up for the wrong reason.

Sarah decided to give up meat for Lent.  My initial reasoning for doing this I will say was I think a good one.  I was going to use it as an attempt to grow in my appreciation for people who chose different habits than I do and learn how being a vegetarian can assist in living sustainably.  Pretty hippie-ish of me, but I recently bought a long skirt so that's just where I am in my life.... ANYWAY.  What started as an attempt at less meat and more devotions quickly turned into a way to lose weight.  However, this quickly backfired as I found that while I may have been eating healthy at mealtimes, I was killing the carbs round the clock.  I snacked like it was my job and went through a loaf of bread in a week.  So that was cool.  2 and a half weeks, 7 pounds, and no new spiritual practices later, I figured it was time to throw in the towel.  I fell into the trap of taking advantage of the season of Lent coinciding with the approaching arrival of bathing suit season... and it backfired.

I'm just thankful that Jesus loves me despite my failed attempts at giving up meat... and I'm thankful I have decided to enjoy chicken again.  Stay posted for details of a juice cleanse or something to undo my carb filled 2 and a half weeks.
